Homemade Granola Bars Are Better

Homemade granola bars taste better and are much healthier than the kind from a box. Have you ever read the ingredient list on the side of the box? I have and all I can say is yikes! Often they are filled with trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, chemical additives and preservatives. Here is a partial ingredient list from the side of the box of a popular national brand: whole grain rolled oats, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, rice flour, sugar, barley malt, corn syrup solids, glycerin, nonfat milk, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sorbitol, soy lecithin, salt, natural and artificial flavor, glyceryl lacto esters of fatty acids, BHT, citric acid.
In this particular bar, corn syrup is listed three times in the ingredient list. You would never include this stuff or that much sugar when you make them yourself. Homemade Granola bars are a totally different experience. You make them in your own kitchen from real ingredients like rolled oats, wheat germ, honey, nuts, and dried fruit. You can control what goes in them, you can make them chewy or crunchy and with the flavors and additions you prefer. Prefer less sweet bars? Use less sugar or substitute your favorite natural sweetener. Want a healthy low fat version? Use less oil or substitute mashed bananas for some or all of the fat. Your options are unlimited organic granola.
Need more convincing? Here are 5 reasons homemade granola bars are better than store-bought: No trans fats. No high fructose corn syrup. No artificial flavors. No preservatives. At home, we make granola bars from real ingredients. Homemade granola bars taste fresh and delicious because they are. Homemade treats and snacks are cheaper than their packaged, individually wrapped counterparts, especially when you have a stocked pantry. You can make them just the way you like them - chewy, crunchy, with nuts, without. Like almonds? Add them. Hate raisins? Leave them out. You are in charge. Making homemade granola bars is much more enjoyable than buying them at the store and your house will smell better too.
